Coen Brothers

It was a first for me to see a movie directed and cowritten by the Coen Brothers. I personally like the humor, irony and brutal violence in the films that i have viewed so far. Blood Simple put them on the road to stardom and they expanded their horizon by producing such films as Fargo and No Country for Old Men which were unquestionably a hit at the box office. Their artistry and vision reflects on their work which is attention grabbing and to say the least satisfying. I like Fargo because of it's gruesome murder scenes like the wood chipper, when Carl is forcebly put in the wood chipper by his an accomplice after they had an argument about who gets to keep the car. They constantly poke fun at intelligent intellectuals just to lighten the mood of the film.

All the films that i have seen that the Coen's have directed have a gross murder aspect which is funny to me. I like that gross aspect because it is action packed and it has that thrill factor which has the audience up on their feet because of how scary it gets. I'm glad that they are from Minnesota because such film as Fargo puts the state that we live in on the Hollywood radar. Just having such geniuses like the Coen's being born in Minnesota is a blessing. I definitely hope to see more of their earlier films as well as watch out for their new and up coming production.

Robert Altman

Robert Altman films were very interesting because hes style is different from other directors. He gives the viewers the option of making there own generalization. He creates a mood that gives us the viewers an inside look on the story by making it relatable. I personally i didnt like his movies because there wasnt a centreal "idea." There were too many charters and that caused me to get confused and lose intrest in the film. For example, Nashvillle was based on country music and that right there made it very boring for me. There were also 24 main charters and it made it very difficult to concentrate on a single character to root for. I keep on getting side tracked by the horrible music and the outrageous amount of charters that i kept on being introduced to. Although i didnt like the plot he made a great comparison between politics and entertainment. It made alot of sense and gave the viewers something to think about. He also has a way of capturing images that affect people and the way he moves the lense makes it intresting to watch. Another movie i enjoyed was the long goodbye it was my favorite film that made about friendship and how it can be misleading and at times deadly. i really liked that movie. Although im not a big fan i do understand and respect his work. Im also saddened that he died without getting an oscar for his films. I know that he deserved it and he really was man of his job.

Fight Club

This film was directed by David Fincher and follows the story of a man , the narrator (Edward Norton). The story is told through Norton's flashback and we learn that he works for an automobile company and goes to accident sites to perform product cost appraisals. He is suffering from insomnia and has difficulty sleeping throughout the night. He goes to his doctor and asked him to prescribe sleeping bills but rather the doctor tells him to go and visit a support group in order to appreciate real pain others go through daily. Attending the support group gives him a sense of false assurance that everything is going in the right direction by manipulating others into feeling sorry of him. The support group gives him the opportunity to let his guard down by letting his emotions out which helps him sleep at night. His routine is disrupted when he notices Marla (Helena Bonham Carter) another impostor attending the same support group he goes to and his insomnia returns. He befriends Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) a soap salesman, while flying to a business trip. Tyler coincidentally gives him his business card. When Norton returns to his apartment for the trip, he finds out that there was an explosion at his apartment and therefore he lost all his belongings and sense of security.
Fincher is well known for his realistic style and story telling. Most of the scenes were shot during the nighttime which ironically had a symbolic meaning to it. For example, Tyler Durden and the narrator chose to create an underground fight club which foreshadowed the destruction that lay ahead. He chose the baseline of the fight to reenterate the symbolic meaning of destruction. Fincher confuses the viewers into thinking that there are two characters but the audience finds out at the end, there was only one character who was behind all the destruction. Norton was deprived of sleep, his brain created illusions that seemed real. There are a lot of people who themselves have had a sleep disorder can relate to Norton's situation. Fincher created this masterpiece to inform people the serious side effects of insomnia. He personalizes the stories and takes the fictional characters and transforms them into non-fiction character that he brings to light.

Twilight

TWILIGHT is an action-packed, modern day love story between a vampire and a mortal starring Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. They are breaking the rules because they are going against all odds to be with each other. I can see why teenager girls are crazy about the books and in particular the movie. I thought i was going to hate the movie but to my surprise it was really good with the exception being the annoying teens behind us who were screaming throughout the entire movie. I personally thought the book was better because it had more substance and it was very interesting and a fast read. Not to mention Edward Cullen was a very good looking vampire. I think this movie would bring out huge masses of people out to go to see it because it is more appealing to the younger and future generation of our time and in the generations to come. What make this movie a phenomenon is the story behind it all and no wonder all girls under the age of 19 years are going absolutely bazaar. I also thought the two characters were made to play the role because the capture the essence of the book. This movie was by far the best movie i have seen all year. I would definitely recommend people to go see it.

High School Musical

I thought it was the worst movie ever. I regret having seen it. The whole movie was over dramatic and every time their is an argument amongst
themselves they break out in to a song. It is the senior year of the Wild Cats and they are faced with the dilemma of being separated from each other because they are going to depart when they graduate because some are going to college in a different state and some are staying.
But, Troy had to face Gabriella leaving for college and when that happened they broke into singing mode and i annoyed me so much. But, truly this movie should be rated for kids that are ages 2-13...instead of it being P-13. All i know that was the lamest movie I've have ever seen..

The movie the great debaters is based on a true story about a debate coach Melvin Tolson played by two time academy award winner Denzel Washington. The Story took place in the 1930's where lynching and unequal rights was widely practiced mainly in the south. He wanted to prove to the world that Blacks were smart too and to inspire his people and get them equal opportunity as the Whites. He fought against the odds eventhough the odds of his team making it was very very slim to none, he was stubborn and he casted a girl to be apart of the Wiley College debate team , eventhough white women had couple of years before got the right to vote, did not mean that the country was ready to free the black man from slavery yet alone give their women the right to voice their opinion publicly. I personally enjoyed this movie because it took me back to the era of slavery. I know there are a lot of films that touch upon this subject but there is no hope for the people involved. My favorite scene is the scene where they debate Harvard University and the most commonly repeated phrase being "A law that is unjust is n law at all", basically saying that each and every individual have got to have the same amount of right and freedom to explore what they like. They ended up wining the debate and they won twelve more debates following their first win. The main point of the film was to show all the hard things that colored folks have over come and all the progress that has been made. There were some high key lighting emphasizing on some of the highlights of the movie and low key lighting showing more dark tone tone with the unjust that was happening. A lot has changed from that period of time but there is a long way to go to over come racial tension and ensuring that everyone gets the justice they deserve.

Citizen Kane

The first scene of Citizen Kane was mysterious because it starts off with a close up shot of the sign "No Trespassing" and the viewers automatically know that they are about to enter a restricted place. There are so many questions that go through the viewers head because we wonder what was the significance of the dying words of Mr Kane which was "Rosebud". As we find out at the end of the movie the word itself isnt as important as it seemed at the begginning of the movie as the director purposely made the dying words of Mr Kane significance but it was all to throw the viewers off. Mr Kane also had a snow globe in his hand and you wonder what is the connection between rosebud and the snow globe. At the end we learn the rosebud is the sled Mr Kane used to play with and the only thing that remained constant in his lifetime. As a child his parents gave him up in order for him to pursue a better life and most importantly to get him away for his abusive father.
He had all the material things money can buy. Most of the shots were shot in low key lighting to emphasis the emptiness and the life Mr Kane lived. Even though, he had lots of money, he was deep down lonely and sad. He had changed his persona and through Mr Leiland, a close friend of his. We learn that Mr Kane changed drastically because he wanted to be loved by everyone and he felt the people owed him the love. You can not help but to feel sorry for the guy, after all his parents sort of chose his lifetime from the early stage of his life. He could've known better and chose to use his popularity and celebrity status to make a difference in hiscommunity. I guess one can say that he tried but that money is the root to evil and that he got carried away with the worldly things and not caring for others.
